Talk about the different types of notes (whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth) as well as the time signature or meter. Talk about how, just like in math, each measure has to make up the number of beats in the time signature. Using a metronome, see if your child can pat out the melody that’s written on the page.
Extra Credit:Ā Have your child try to transcribe the rhythm of a piece of music onto sheet music, using a metronome. (Don’t worry about the notes.) Look at the actual sheet music. How close did s/he come?
