Go to a park or into another natural setting (e.g. beach, woods, etc.) with your child. Then show your child a letter perfect poem like this one (a poem in which each line starts with the same letter). Choose something you see to compose a letter perfect poem together (e.g. tree, grass, sand). Then, have him/her choose a different subject in the environment (e.g. wave, rock, vine) and try it on their own. If s/he gets stuck, brainstorm other words that start with the same letter together.
Extra Credit: Read selections from a poetry anthology like Color Me a Rhyme: Nature Poems for Young People with your child.
