A shape poem is one that describes an object and is written in the shape of the object. To get your child’s creative juices flowing, you can look at examples of shape poetry here. Next, have your child pick an object to write about. Brainstorm words that you both think of when you see the shape or would use to describe the object. If your child is under 7 years old, have them first draw the picture, then give you the words they’d use to describe it as you fill in the shape with their description. If your child is over 7, ask him/her to write the poem in the object’s shape. Encourage your child to use different colors to further embellish their work.
Extra Credit: Try making a picture with multiple objects…each filled in with a shape poem. (e.g. sun, rainbow, cloud, tree, grass and flower; a farm with multiple animals.)
