With 4th of July quickly approaching, Canada Day just past and Bastille Day next week, it seems that people the world over are celebrating citizenship. Play some national anthems with your child and read the english versions of the lyrics together.

English versions of anthem lyrics for a vast array of countries can be found here:

The US Navy Band has streaming MP3s of national anthems for many countries here:

Talk together about the kinds of instruments you hear in the anthems and how the music makes your child feel. Then, talk about the similar words that are found in each piece.

If your child was to create an anthem for a group s/he belongs to (e.g. family, school, church, scouts, country, etc.) , what instruments would s/he choose to incorporate? What words would s/he use in the anthem to tell others how it feels to be a part of that group?

Celebrates and enhances interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence through a musical lens.
